Young Musicians of the World’s Montreal school accommodates approximately sixty girls and boys from the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve quarter, Tuesdays through Fridays from 3:45pm to 7:45pm, in the spacious classrooms at the Pavillon d’éducation communautaire (PEC). The students enroll in one or several courses according to their personal interests, their abilities, and their availability.
Divided into different skill levels and by age group, the children participate in these workshops free of charge. Class time is divided into periods of 45 minutes. The students are welcomed with snacks by our personnel and volunteers.
The instruments being taught currently are the violin, the flute, the piano, the guitar, and the harmonica. Lessons are given to small groups of two to five children, except for piano lessons, which are given on an individual basis. Group classes are also offered; students may choose between dance, singing, and percussions. The instruments are lent to the students by Young Musicians of the World, thanks to a contribution made by the “Fondation du Canadien de Montréal” and other generous donors.
The oral transmission process, characteristic of folklore, continues to be the primary learning method. Like jazz or classical music, traditional folk music is taught as an institution in and of itself. The school’s educators practice a teaching method that focuses on the specific characteristics of the province’s traditional music. This occurs in an environment and a project in which the child is encouraged to excel while living a group experience.
Frequent contact with accomplished artists arouses in the students a healthy curiosity towards their culture. They thus familiarize themselves with numerous facets of Quebec’s musical heritage and traditions from elsewhere. Integrating music into the children’s lives facilitates the realization of their full potential as well as their personal and social development.
